Offstage, in her personal life, Phyllis acknowledged her battle with mental health challenges, which were often precipitated by her overwhelming sensitivity in dealing with the pain she witnessed in the world. Her manager and the executrix of her estate, Glenda Gracia, notes that Phyllis’ suicide on June 30, 1995, just days before what would have been her 46th birthday, “represented an alternative to living inside a life that was filled with pain she felt she couldn’t escape…”
In the wake of her passing, which stunned so many of her avid fans worldwide, PIR released the album, I Refuse To Be Lonely, which included five of Phyllis’ own co-compositions including the title cut. In 1998, PIR released a second posthumous album, Forever With You, which culled twelve tracks from the PIR vaults, including “The Strength Of A Woman,” a song Phyllis co-wrote with Denise Rich and Sunny Hilden during her final years.
